How to Memorize a Turbo Kick Round

Once you receive your Brand NEW Turbo Kick Round in the mail, where do you event START to begin to learn the choreography? This is one of the questions Turbo Kick Instructors ask me daily!!!  Well…I believe it is different for everyone and you have to find YOUR WAY of learning it, but I’m going to share with you HOW I LEARN and MEMORIZE the Round in less than 2 days!!!  I just received Round 50 yesterday and I am going to teach it TONIGHT!!!  Now remember I have been teaching Turbo Kick for 8 years!!!! So it takes time to learn them this fast….but you will!! BE PERSISTENT!!!

Step 1: Listen to the CD in my car to get familiar with the music!  (Remember the music on the dvd is DIFFERENT then the CD due to licensing fees)

Step 2: Watch the PREVIEW SECTION – I have a blank notebook, pen and choreography liner notes in front of me.  I just WATCH and WRITE out the CHOREOGRAPHY in my own words…I do NOT do the workout at this point.  Writing it out helps you memorize it and makes it easier to learn because you understand your own “terminology”

Step 3: Watch the WORKOUT – I watch the workout section and visually match it up to my notes to make sure I understand what I wrote!  I mainly study the BASIC LAYERS (3-4 moves in a song) and write the advanced layers off to the side (If I plan to teach them in later weeks…this is up to you and the level of your class)

Step 4: DO THE WORKOUT!!! So this is usually the next day for me.  I’ve had to time to let the choreography sync in my head, now I do the workout straight through from warm – up to finale with the DVD

Step 5: PUT THE CD IN and DO THE CHOREOGRAPHY from my own NOTES!!!!  I do one section at a time to memorize it and MATCH it to the music!  And I personally learn the TURBO SECTION LAST!!!!  It’s usually the hardest part for me to memorize and I dont want it to slow me down, so I learn everything else 1st then go back to it!!!

PRACTICE – PRACTICE – PRACTICE!!!!  AT this point, I pretty much know it now I just need to MEMORIZE IT!! So I continue to practice the Chor to the CD, listen to the CD in the car and match the moves and then practice in the mirror without notes right before class!!!!

EXTRA TIPS – Set a GOAL DATE!!!! When I receive the Round I tell myself, I’m teaching this on _______.  That holds me accountable to learn it faster!!!  Also, keep your notes with you and if you need to look at them, that’s ok!!! We all forget the material the first few times…the main thing is to keep YOUR EYES on you students and have FUN!!!

Get Hired at a Group Fitness Instructor Audition

As a Group Fitness Instructor for 15+ years, a previous Group Fitness Director over multiple facilities for 10 years and a Presenter for Powder Blue Productions for 6 years…I have a load of EXPERIENCE in hiring, training and developing Instructors!!  Besides all of my own personal auditions, I’ve trained hundreds of students on how to make the leap from student to instructor and NAIL THE GROUP FITNESS AUDITION!!  Here are my TOP TIPS:

1. Do Your Homework- Research the Club you will be auditioning at.  Look to see if your favorite format is offered, what other classes on the schedule can you also teach and what classes are you interested to LEARN how to teach.  What are the most popular classes on the schedule and why?  If your favorite format is NOT on the schedule, be prepared to PRESENT it to the GX Director with Passion!!  They may not be familiar with it and you will need send them more info including a website, youtube video etc.  They may also be resistant to offering a new format – be ready to show them how it can compliment an existing class…yet still build numbers!

2. What to Bring- Copies of your Primary Group Fitness Certification/ CPR / Additional Trainings, Certifications, Workshops attended (this info may be emailed ahead of time but always have it on you just in case)

3. Dress to Impress- Bring your A GAME!! This is a job interview and you still want to STAND OUT as a Fitness Professional! Wear a zip up jacket that you can remove when you start to workout…followed with your BEST workout attire to teach class in.  Think of all the details including shoes, hair & make up (ladies) to polish off your professional look!  Greet the Director with a SMILE, EYE CONTACT and a Confident Handshake!!  They are looking for PEOPLE FRIENDLY Stand Outs…that’s YOU!!  Make a Great First Impression and sometimes thats within the first 11 seconds that someone meets you!!

4. Time to Shine- When it is time to Audition, take the floor and OWN IT!! Show your Passion for teaching in every step that you take!  KNOW your material and practice ahead of time.  Directors are looking for Confidence, Musicality, Cueing Skills, Energy & Enthusiasm, Knowledge on Form/Technique and Modifications to name a few.  You will have less than 5 minutes to put it all together…do your BEST, have FUN and be YOU x 10!!  Recognize that there are areas that you may need to work on, be OPEN to feedback and let the GX Director know you are willing to LEARN & TRAIN with them to get better…that goes a long way!

5. Be Flexible – You may want the prime time FAV CLASS at 6pm on Monday Nights but instead the only classes that are available are friday nights and early mornings…everyone starts in the same place and in the beginning you need to take what you can get and just GET IN!  Let the Director know you are free to sub, interested in learning more formats and open to new time slots as they become available.  THINK – How can I help?  If you show flexibility in your schedule and a willingness to learn,  you will be considered even if you are NEW!  Share your Passion and communicate you’re willing to do what it takes to improve your skills….that’s how you get your foot in the door!

OK Yes I almost fell over when I seen my paycheck this week, over $5000 for 1 week in Beachbody….but more importantly, I need you to know that is NOT the best part!!!  You know me…did you forget that I’m the Everyday Girl who grew up in a small town, had a single mom, believes in “Happily Ever After” & Fairytales, teaches Fitness Classes (BTW Instructors TEACH bcz they LOVE it, not because they are getting paid) met my husband on the school bus and was on UNEMPLOYMENT in Jan 2010!!!  I’m as down to earth as they get!!  I’m overly Optimistic and “Live in a Bubble” of Positive People…I don’t watch the news much, I steer away from drama or anything/anyone negative and Simply Love to Help People!!!  I share this with you because I KNOW that people REALLY DON’T KNOW what I “do”….or how I’ve MADE this happen…

I lost my job of 13 years in Nov 2009 and went on Unemployment, which was Heart Wrenching Disappointing for a work-aholic like myself!!  I earned more in January of 2012 from my Beachbody Coaching Business than we earned in 6 months in my final year working downtown Chicago!!!  I’ve LOST 17lbs and YES feel Amazing!!!  But wait….HOW is this all possible??  I want you to know WHO I WAS before I started – in fact the picture on the left is from 2006 and yes I’m blonde!!!  You may see me now and think that this was EASY or that I’m “Special” but I’m NOT!!!!  In 2006 I didn’t have an email account, I didn’t own a computer, I didn’t know what social media was, I was over bloated/over weight, I would NEVER EVER speak in public and although I was Happily Married….I wasn’t FULL-FILLED INSIDE!!!!!!  I created the life I have right now….I want people to know that!! I LEARNED EVERYTHING I had to – to be Successful and turn our life around!!  We were SWALLOWED in CREDIT CARD DEBT…so people can say “Money isn’t Important” but its also the #1 REASON FOR DIVORCE!!  It’s not about finances—-Its about FREEDOM!!!!!  Freedom to Live a Life we could only DREAM OF – on OUR own TERMS, our own TIME…..

and the BEST PART IS…..I’ve built this Business helping others including some of my BEST FRIENDS Change their Lives!!!  So the $$$$ REALLY REPRESENTS – Weight Loss, More Energy, Getting out of Debt, Retiring at 34 years of age, Moms staying home w/ their family, More Time and FREEDOM to do WHAT YOU WANT!! YOU Get to Decide…You are in Control!!! Or at least you can be….with eveyone losing their jobs right and left, the economy in the place that it is, people losing their homes, the over growing OBESITY EPIDEMIC, people TIRED of being sick and TIRED….I say, you don’t have to!!!!!  I said, ENOUGH is ENOUGH!!!  When I was a little girl….I honestly thought some MAGIC business/job/opportunity was going to just come to me so I would know what to do w/ my life….because I’ve always wanted to do something GREAT….but guess what, I learned that it doesn’t come to you….YOU have to FIND IT!!!  Then you have to go after it like you have ONE LIFE TO LIVE!!!  Don’t look at today….FOCUS on tomorrow, a year from now, 2 years from now….thats what I did!

My HEART is FULL because of all the lives I’m touching inside and out!!  I’m running a business that I started making $50/week here and there….Now a Huge Organization that is going to Blow My Mind in the next 2 years….but I’m LEADING with my HEART!!  Its a RELATIONSHIP Business – if you INVEST in your people & team, truly LISTEN and help them make their DREAMS COME TRUE…you will be continuely Blessed!!!!

I can’t believe this was 2 years ago –

MY EAT CLEAN Grocery List

I’ve been on a MISSION for the past few years to really LEARN how to EAT CLEAN and get my Nutrition under control.  Its a learning process, but for me its about FEELING MY BEST!! Struggling w/ IBS for 20 years I have done a lot of research on what we are putting in our bodies, what’s healthy, what’s not healthy and why!  I’ve lost 17lbs but still on the journey to lose the next 5lbs…here’s a peak into my grocery list for the week!

I surround all of my meals around a LEAN PROTEIN source and then compliment with a complex CARB.  Right now I’m doing a 60 day Challenge Group so I am removing the carbs 1-2 meals a day for a short period of time.  I drink 2 shakes a day, supplement and drink tons of water!! Plus for the most part–I am Dairy & Wheat Free too!!  I don’t like to cook, that’s for sure!!! So for me I want to keep it SIMPLE!!

My Top 3 Takeaways from Chalene Johnson’s 30 Day PUSH!

If you have been thinking about diving into the 30 day PUSH book / online challenge with Fitness, Business & Life Expert, Chalene Johnson…I’m going to share with you how AMAZING & HIGHLY EFFECTIVE this program has been for me!!

I’ve worked for Chalene Johnson’s Company, Powder Blue Productions, for 6 years now.  At a time in my life where I was HUNGRY to do more in Fitness and Inspire others, she over fulilled all of my hopes & expectations!  I knew from the moment I met Chalene, that this woman has got IT ALL TOGETHER!!!!  She’s truly HAPPY, Comfortable Public Speaking, Confident in her own skin, Happily Married, A Successful Business Owner and created an Empire DOING WHAT SHE LOVES for a living!!!!  Motivating, Smart, Savvy, Balanced, Trendy…SERIOUSLY?? How does she do it all?  I think those are the words that float through my mind EVERY TIME I hear her speak – every live training, youtube video, 30 day free challenge, Camp Do More, Turbo Kick Classes and more…..NOW I KNOW!!!!  AND all of her “Secrets”, Tips and HABITS are revealed in PUSH!!!

“30 Days to Turbocharged Habits, a Bangin Body & the Life you Deserve!!” And it DELIVERS!!  First I want to say that I have been following her trainings for years and even though I had picked up bits and pieces here and there, I knew once I put it all TOGETHER it would be POWERFUL!!  Everyone will TAKE AWAY different things because we are all LOOKING for different things….here were my BIG A HA MOMENTS…

 

1. DISCIPLINE – Sticking with the 30 day program forced me into NEW HABITS…Discipline!!  We all have the POWER to Achieve Every GOAL we set for ourselves…but most of us lack the DISCIPLINE to do the Daily Baby Steps to get there.  Learning to look at a BIGGER GOAL and FORCING myself to learn a new habit, therefore DISCIPLINING myself was the missing link.  Successful People are Disciplined to Do What Most Others won’t….

2. ORGANIZATION: Ahhh I run the other way when I hear this word!!  Details?? Me?? Oh No!!   I see the Big Picture but the details make me want to jump on to the next task on my list.  I’ve always made a To Do List but it was on several pieces of paper…post it notes, notebooks and notebooks and notebooks, cell phone apps YOU NAME IT!!!  Why couldn’t I find ONE that worked?  After learning her simple system of breaking down the tasks on your To Do List to TODAY, THIS WEEK & SOMEDAY – I found an app that I fell in LOVE with GET IT DONE APP 

It follows the same folders, syncs to my phone and I am able to do my To Do List on my computer…which is WHAT Works For ME!!!  It’s not just creating a To Do List, most people do that….its Creating a To Do List with the TASKS that are going to move you towards your Push Goal!!

3. PUSH GOAL / THINKING BIG – One of her signature ideas in the book is teaching you how to set Goals but specifically a PUSH Goal.  Basically a Yearly BIG Goal then when accomplished will allow all of your other goals to fall into place as ACCOMPLISHED!!  She has you write out 10 Goals for the year and IDENTIFY which one will be your Push Goal.  NOW….I have done the 10 Goals before, specifically in 2006 when I first became a Presenter for PBP.  It worked for me then when I had no idea what I was doing, haha!! This time around I added the PUSH GOAL – which was still EASY….but now came the HARD PART…..Reverse Engineering your Push Goal!!!!  Again, I ve heard her talk about this before, show it on videos and I always RAN to the next task….thinking oh no way!! NO WAY can I do that…really I was telling myself that I wasn’t willing to DISCIPLINE myself to do that!!  What is Reverse Engineering – in simple terms….breaking down your Push Goal to EVERY SINGLE TINY STEP you must take to achieve it!! And your goal is to come up with a huge, LONG list of mini tasks…the more the better!! Ahhhhh  Well Guess What….I did it!! I MADE MYSELF DO IT!!  I went into the dining room, posted the GIANT Poster Size Post It notes on the wall and started writing for probably a good 30 minutes NON STOP!!!  Once I was done I thought I was going to feel overwhelmed and think…HOW in the world am I ever going to do all of this????  But just the opposite happened…..I felt RELIEF!!  I felt a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders because I just spilled every idea, thought, to do list task on paper…every single one of them.  I HAD A PLAN…ON PAPER!!!  A Plan to Achieve the Biggest Goal of my Personal Career, one that will Change my Family’s Life!!!

Chalene teaches you the HABITS to Success whether Fitness, Nutrition, Relationships or Business!!  It is a Life Changing Book!  She is REAL, down to earth and you will feel like you are talking to your Best Friend when she takes you through the journey.  Can you Discipline yourself to PUSH for 30 days?? I’m glad I did!! It wasn’t easy, but it was 100% worth it!! Now I’m PUSHING you to do the same!!

Staying Slim through Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is around the corner, do you have a plan NOT to overeat this holiday?  Are you thinking “This is ONE DAY and I’m going to eat whatever I want  because its the holiday and I deserve it”?? If so, that’s great but then this blog post probably isn’t for you….its for those who want to enjoy their holiday but still keep it safe!!  Here are few tips of mine to not over-indulge and pack any additional pounds this weekend…

1. PLAN AHEAD – You probably need to plan out your 4 day weekend as most people have multiple parties/family gatherings.  Know when you will be eating out and try to stay on schedule for all other meals besides those.  Example – If you know you are having a full spread Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday at 5pm then plan to stay on your regular healthy breakfast, lunch and mid meals before then.

2. DON’T SKIP MEALS – Avoid the thinking “well I’ll just fast till dinner then I can eat whatever I want/ Save my calories” Noooooo ahhhhh!!!! I scream when I hear this!!!  In theory it sounds good but here is what happens ….. you slow down your metabolism and you end up being SO HUNGRY by the time the meal comes that you OVER EAT!!! You can shrink and stretch your stomach when you do this….not good!!  It’s better to eat your normal meals beforehand and you will make smarter decisions at meal time 🙂

3. WORKOUT! Even a 30 minute workout that morning will Boost your Metabolism that day AND naturally curb your appetite!!  It doesn’t have to be a long workout but just get it in!!

4. CHOOSE YOUR PLATE – Again have a plan going in….you know there will be a spread of all your Favorites!!!  And you CAN have them….but in moderation.  Fill your plate with WHOLE FOODS like Turkey (watch the gravy), salad, veggies, mashed potatoes (ok!) and then leave small amounts for all the other stuff thats probably not so healthy – casseroles, cheesy pastas/rice, buttery buns etc.  This way you won’t feel deprived but GOOD that you are in CONTROL!!!

5. DESSERT – If you are not a dessert person….ask yourself, do I really want this?? Don’t just eat it to eat it…sound silly?? but I hear that ALL THE TIME!!  I AM A DESSERT PERSON so I personally will save my calories for this :))) Moderation is KEY, ENJOY!!

6. LEFTOVERS – This is where you can get in trouble!  You can get away with eating one INDULGENT dinner and even dessert BUT not for 3 or 4 days in a row…yikes!!  Send food home with people and if you’re not hosting, be careful with what you TAKE WITH YOU…because you know you will eat it!  Don’t just take food to be polite 🙁

7. GET RIGHT BACK TO YOUR NORMAL SCHEDULE – The faster you can get back on track with healthy eating and your workout regimen, the Better!!!

It’s the Holidays and YES you should enjoy yourself!!!! BUT….also look at your personal priorites and goals, hopefully these Tips will help you STAY ON TRACK!!

Living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

I’ve been on what feels like a life long journey battling Irritable Bowel Syndrom (IBS) / Spastic Colon! It has RULED my life for 19 years!!! I WISH I knew NOW 19 years ago, but I didn’t….and everything I have learned has been my own research and trial/error. There is hope, you can conquer this and take back your life….it starts NOW!!

First thing to know is that there are 2 different types of IBS – IBSC and IBSD (constipation or diarrhea) I know…lovely that we are talking about this right!!  I have IBSC – For most of my life I walked around with a BLOATED BELLY that was rock hard, I held on to a ton of WATER WEIGHT and ALWAYS had Random SPASM ATTACKS of sharp shooting pains….so painful that no matter where I was I had to drop to the floor and lie on my right side for the pain to go away.  It was a nightmare!! In my teenage years it was so bad I was literally AFRAID TO EAT….so you can imagine where that went.  Then 5 years later I seemed to keep packing on the pounds no matter how much I worked out!!!  FRUSTRATING!!!  You will NEED to get diagnosed by a Doctor as I can not tell you whether you have it or not….it is also in so many layers that different people experience different levels of discomfort and/or pain.  As the years went on it only got worse….it literally took me HITTING THE WALL to DECIDE i was DONE!!! I was going to do what it took to FIGURE IT OUT and BEAT IT!!!!

Here are my top tips on controlling IBSC

1. You must CLEAN UP your DIET – I list some of the trigger foods in the video below but will do an additional blog post on this

2. Only drink WATER

3. Avoid STRESS

4. Get 8 +++ hours of SLEEP
